Swanage sits at the end of the road, and everyone who lives there pays for it when the car goes wrong: one main route in and out, packed solid on summer weekends, and the bigger garages a long haul away in Poole. A mobile mechanic flips that problem around. The car stays put, outside your house or your work — I do the travelling, and I know which way over the hill makes sense at which time of year.

There's a particular kind of job Swanage gives me more than anywhere else: the car that's been sitting. Second homes, holiday lets, the car kept for the summer months — vehicles that stand for weeks or months and then refuse to wake up. Flat and failing batteries, seized brakes, perished rubber, lapsed MOTs. If you're coming down and want the car alive when you arrive, or you've arrived and it isn't, that's bread-and-butter work for me — and MOTs are by appointment: I collect the car, put it through the test and bring it back.
