Bere Regis

Mobile mechanic in Bere Regis

Out here, "mobile" isn't a convenience. It's the only version of this that makes sense.

Bere Regis and the Piddle valley villages — Briantspuddle, Affpuddle, Turners Puddle, Winterborne Kingston — are a proper drive from any garage. When a car won't start here, the usual routine means recovery to Poole or Dorchester, a day without the car, then somehow getting back to collect it. For a lot of households round here that's not an inconvenience, it's the whole day's plans gone — school runs, work, the lot.

My version is simpler: you call, I drive out from Wareham, and the car gets fixed where it stands — on the drive, in the farmyard, outside the village hall. Most jobs that would have meant a recovery truck turn out to be a morning's work on the spot: batteries, starters, brakes, fuel problems, electrical faults. And the planned work — servicing, cambelts, clutches, MOTs by appointment — happens the same way, without you ever leaving the village.

It's also working country. Vans that earn their keep, 4x4s that live outdoors, trailers and horseboxes towed by them — vehicles that work hard and can't be spared for a garage queue. That's exactly the work a van full of tools is built for.

Land Rover Discovery jacked up with the front wheel off and bonnet raised, repaired where it stood

Fixed where it stood

Wheel off, bonnet up, sorted on the spot — no recovery truck involved. That's the normal way of things out here.
